From Power to Isolation: An Analysis of the Life and Career of Abdolhossein Khan Salar-al-Molk Garrusi in the Transformations of the Qajar Era
Mohammad Marivani
Abstract:   (713 Views)
Abdolhossein Khan Salar-al-Molk Garrusi (d. 1313 SH), son of Hassan Ali Khan Amir Nezam Garrusi, was one of the prominent military and political figures of Garrus and Kurdistan during the late Qajar and early Pahlavi periods. In his youth, he was appointed governor of Garrus and commander of the local regiment, and for many years played a significant role in the region’s military and administrative affairs. However, the political and social changes brought about by the Constitutional Revolution and the centralization of power under the central government transformed the traditional structure of local authority and undermined his position. The main question of this study is: What role did Abdolhossein Khan Salar-al-Molk Garrusi play in the political and military developments of Garrus and Kurdistan, and what factors led to the gradual decline of his authority and withdrawal from politics? Using a descriptive–analytical method based on primary Qajar sources, local writings, and historical documents, this research examines his actions before and after the Constitutional Revolution. Findings indicate that although Salar-al-Molk initially maintained broad influence in Garrus and Kurdistan through tribal power and his father’s legacy, his authority waned as national political structures shifted toward centralization. The study concludes that his political life represents a vivid example of the gradual transition from a tribal and local system of power to a centralized model of governance at the dawn of the 14th century.
