Abstract

The causes and results of Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh's Shiism have reflected widely in historical sources of the Eastern Islamic world, especially in Iranian sources. Ibn Rizwan Maleqi (Died 782 AH) and Ibn Azraq Gharnati (Died 896 AH), two prominent Andalusian policymakers in Islamic western world, acquainted with this story through Travelogue of Ibn Battuta. These two have considered this issue not from a historiographical point of view, but condemning and denouncing this event from the position of political scholars who sought to correct the affairs and explain the desirable Islamic political system based on the Islam specific reading of Mālikī. The main question of the study is how Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh's tendency towards Shiism reflected in the political thought of Ibn Rizwan Maleqi and Ibn Azraq Gharnati? This article by considering works of these two Andalusian scientists has shown that the influence of Sunni worldview of these two scientists and the motives involved in composing their works have been influenced by political and social atmosphere of Islamic western world. Islamic beliefs of Ibn Rizwan and Ibn Azraq based on Mālikī religion and the view to Shiism as heresy in Islam, have presented a negative image of Sultan Muhammad Khodabandeh’s tendency to Shiism in Islamic western world.

Abstract

Abu Saleh Bazam is one of the Iranian followers (tābi‘ūn), narrators, and interpreters. He was the servant of Umm-e Hani, the daughter of Abū Ṭālib. He narrated numerous Ḥadīth from companions of the Prophet. Scholars and narrators expressed conflicting views on the correctness or weakness of his ḥadīths. Some of his ḥadīths are about the virtues of Khorasan. The main question of this study is what is the role of considering these ḥadīths on the disparaging and declaring trustworthy (Al-Jarh wa L-Ta’dil) of his ḥadīth personality? Using a historical approach and descriptive-analytical method, this article tried to study the reflection of his ḥadīths about the news of Khorasan in the historical texts after expressing the life of Abu Saleh Bazam, the servant of Umm-e Hani, and his relations with Banū Hāshim. Findings of the study is confirming the views of many narrators, Tarajom (Ethnography), and writing biographical layers (Tabaqat) about the weakness of Bazam’s ḥadīth and his cautious viewpoint about some of his narrations including news of the virtues of Khorasan.

Abstract

Nizam al-Din ‘Abd al-Baqi Yazdi (deceased in 920) was a prominent figure during the formation of the Ṣafavid state, having held the positions of prime minister (Ṣedārat) and deputy (vekalat Nafs Nafīs Homāyūn) of the royal court under Shah Ismāʿīl. He was ultimately killed in the procession of the aforementioned king at the Battle of Chaldiran by the forces of Sultan Selim of the Ottoman. This research aims to elucidate the historical reasons and contexts that led to his proximity to Shah Ismāʿīl and his elevation within the religious and political structures of the prime ministry (Ṣedārat) and deputy (vekalat), relying on primary sources from this period, including some newly discovered documents, through a descriptive-analytical approach. The studies and findings of this research indicate that ‘Abd al-Baqi's religious and mystical personality within the Ni'matullāhī Order, along with his collaboration and interaction with Shah Ismāʿīl from the early years of his conquests against political and religious opponents, were significant factors in ‘Abd al-Baqi's influential role in the structures and transformations of that era.
