The study of Guilani women’s status in historical texts and travelogues is significant because Guilan, owing to its geographical position, cultural distinctiveness, and contact with the outside world, has long differed from the prevailing social structures of other Iranian regions. Despite women’s notable participation in various aspects of life, official historical sources have often overlooked their true roles. Travelogues, especially those written by foreign travelers, can partly compensate for these gaps. This study employs a library-based method and content analysis of travel narratives to reinterpret these texts and uncover the hidden layers of Guilani women’s social position, particularly during the Qajar era. Findings reveal that Guilani women were active yet marginalized within multiple layers of society—from domestic and economic spheres to political engagement. Although their visibility remained constrained by patriarchal structures, travelogues offer a multi-dimensional portrayal of these women, often more nuanced and realistic than the official historiography of the time.
