The Naqshbandiyya-Khālidiyya Order in Garrus: Scope of Activities, Centers, and Religious Functions
Seyed Saeed Hosseini , Seyed AhmadReza Khezri
Abstract:   (647 Views)
The Naqshbandiyya order is one of the most influential Sufi traditions in the Islamic world and is best known in Kurdistan through the legacy of Mawlānā Khālid Shahrzūrī (1193–1242 AH). His efforts led to the spread of the Khālidiyya branch across Ottoman territories, particularly in 19th-century Kurdistan, transforming it into an influential religious and social movement. Given the distinctive religious composition of the Garrus region, examining the presence and influence of the Naqshbandiyya there provides valuable insight into the order’s social and spiritual functions. Using library sources, select field data, and a descriptive–analytical method, this study explores the activities of key Naqshbandi leaders and followers in Garrus. Findings show that the Naqshbandi Sadat family of Amrulah played a central role in preserving and strengthening Sunni beliefs in the region’s Sunni-inhabited villages through the establishment of khānaqāh-madrasas and by attracting scholars and students of religious sciences. Additionally, figures such as Seyyed Mohammad Elyasi—known as Ashraf al-Hokamā—expanded the order’s social influence by combining medical practice with Sufi affiliations. In later periods, continued missionary and religious activities by individuals like Khalifeh Abbas Rezaei reflected the ongoing vitality of the order’s functions. Overall, the research demonstrates that the Naqshbandiyya order in Garrus functioned beyond a purely mystical framework, serving as a socio-religious institution that played a decisive role in sustaining Sunni identity and safeguarding Sunni beliefs in the region.
