Legitimizing the Scientific and Cultural Movement of Baghdad in the Early Abbasid Period with Emphasis on the Cultural Hegemony Approach
Samereh Remazani , Ramezan Rezayi *
Abstract:   (202 Views)
With the rise of the Abbasids to power, the Islamic world experienced extensive political, social, and cultural transformations that the Abbasid dynasty utilized to construct and reinforce its political legitimacy. Employing a qualitative–analytical approach and integrating Antonio Gramsci’s theory of cultural hegemony with Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital, this study examines the role of political developments in the formation and flourishing of the scientific and cultural movement of Baghdad during the early Abbasid Caliphate. The central hypothesis of the research is that Baghdad’s scientific prosperity was not merely a cultural phenomenon but rather a political strategy adopted by the Abbasids to establish cultural hegemony and consolidate political legitimacy. The findings indicate that the Abbasids, through targeted investment in cultural and scholarly institutions, succeeded in stabilizing their intellectual dominance and utilized the cultural capital produced in Baghdad as an instrument for legitimizing political authority. The promotion of scientific achievements portrayed the Abbasids as patrons of knowledge and civilization, thereby expanding ideological influence and reducing challenges to legitimacy, particularly those posed by the Alids. Accordingly, the scientific and cultural flourishing of Baghdad functioned as a mechanism of cultural engineering aimed at achieving the long-term political objectives of the Abbasid Caliphate.
