Abstract: (579 Views) |
In the first century AH, concurrent with the Muslim conquests, Garrus—located along the cultural corridor of western Iran—was among the earliest regions exposed to the new faith. Unlike some areas that accepted Islam through military confrontation, Garrus embraced Islam through reconciliation and cultural adaptation. The central question of this study is: How did the process of Islamization in Garrus create a suitable foundation for the spread and consolidation of Shi‘ism? The article’s hypothesis posits that the acceptance of Islam in Garrus was facilitated by compatible cultural elements and active interactions with Shi‘i religious centers, paving the way for the propagation of Shi‘ism. Employing a descriptive–analytical method, this study aims to analyze the process of Islamization in Garrus and its role in the expansion of Shi‘ism. Findings indicate that both ideological and spiritual elements, as well as the migration of the ʿAlawids (ʿAlawiyyūn) during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AH, eased the acceptance of Islam and laid the groundwork for the integration of ʿAlawid and Shi‘i teachings in the following decades. Cultural evidence—such as the primary mourning rituals—illustrates how the initial conversion to Islam served as a prelude to the institutionalization of Shi‘ism in the region.
